Nuclear plant Michigan venting radioactive steam

The Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan is venting radioactive steam (containing the radiactive hydrogen isotope ‘tritium’) into the air as part of an unplanned shutdown triggered by an electrical accident.

This shutdown came just five days after the plant restarted from another shutdown that was caused by a leak in the plant’s cooling system.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokeswoman Prema Chandrithal said that the current shutdown happened because an object slipped during work on a circuit breaker and caused an arc that took out power for one of two DC electrical systems that power safety valves and other devices.

Virginia earthquake almost hits limit for nuclear plant (5.9 Richter)

Virginia nuclear plant; earthquake related problems

On August 23, 2011 Virginia was hit by a 5.9 earthquake. The epicenter was just 16km (10 mile) from the nuclear plant.

According to a representative of Dominion Power, the Virginia nuclear plant was built to only withstand a 5.9-6.1 earthquake (Richter scale).

The quake caused loss of offsite power to the plant. Diesel generators were used to keep the cooling system running.

However, one of the four diesel generators stopped working after startup, David McIntyre, a spokesman for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said.

According the Nuclear Regulatory Commision the chances of serious earthquake-related issues for the Virginia plant are calculated to be no more than 1 in 22,727.

During the 1990s the earthquake detectors for this plant were removed because of budget cuts.

The North Anna plant, is reportedly located on a fault line.

Recently several incidents related to nuclear plants were reported throughout the USA.

The loss of offsite power and failure of generators caused the ongoing nuclear disaster in Fukushima (Japan).

Flood berm collapses at Fort Calhoun (Nebraska) nuclear plant, emergency generators running

A berm holding the flooded Missouri River back from the Fort Calhoun (Nebraska) nuclear power station collapsed early Sunday.

The berm’s collapse didn’t affect the reactor shutdown cooling or the spent fuel pool cooling, but the power supply was cut after water surrounded the main electrical transformers. Emergency generators powered the plant until an off-site power supply was connected Sunday afternoon.

Despite the risk of being flooded, the Cooper nuclear plant still operates at full power

A levee three miles north of Brownville in Missouri failed at about 9 p.m. Thursday, right in front a pair of people patrolling there. ”It happened so quick that they were concerned that they may not be able to escape,” Mark Manchester, deputy emergency management director for Atchison County, Mo., said late Thursday. “The water was coming through fast and hard. … We’re not sure what the size of the break is so far.”

The Cooper nuclear plant of Brownsville plant is still operating at full power. Consequences of this levee failure for the nuclear plant are still unknown.

Currently, another US nuclear plant (Fort Calhoun) is also facing trouble from the floodings.

Another nuclear plant in Nebraska (Cooper Nuclear Station) is raising concerns. A flooding alert was issued for this nuclear power plant.

As shown in the picture, the plant is already close to being flooded.
The Brownville levee is reported to be dangerously close to breaking. Sandbagging efforts have been abandoned. One wonders how such a break would affect Cooper Nuclear just three miles downstream.

Nevertheless, the Cooper plant remains in service at full power.

Although not hitting the 100 CPM alert level (yet), radiation readings for the Fort Calhoun (Omaha, Nebraska) area have been increasing the last couple of hours, bouncing between 30 and 50.

Omaha Public Power District caught lying over Nebraska accident classification

The Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) is clearly lying about the rumoured level-4 classification! The OPPD denies such a classification even exist.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEO) however clearly states the classification exists.

Why would the OPPD deny the existence of the said classification? Damage control going wrong?
