Nuclear plant Michigan venting radioactive steam

The Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan is venting radioactive steam (containing the radiactive hydrogen isotope ‘tritium’) into the air as part of an unplanned shutdown triggered by an electrical accident.

This shutdown came just five days after the plant restarted from another shutdown that was caused by a leak in the plant’s cooling system.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokeswoman Prema Chandrithal said that the current shutdown happened because an object slipped during work on a circuit breaker and caused an arc that took out power for one of two DC electrical systems that power safety valves and other devices.

Fukushima: radiation levels almost 170 times that of Hiroshima atomic bomb

The amount of radioactive caesium that has leaked from the Fukushima nuclear power plant is roughly 168 times that released by the atomic bomb the United States dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said the plant has released 15,000 tera-becquerels of caesium-137, which lingers for decades and could cause cancer.

Just days earlier it was reported that – 5 months after the accident -
TEPCO said it detected the highest radiation levels to date, recording 10,000 millisievert an hour– the maximum level their devices can even measure.

In comparison, 450 millisievert is the increase in lifetime dose to the most heavily exposed people living near Chernobyl. Many of these people or their children developed cancer and other diseases.

The radiation measured at the Fukishima plant is more than 20 times higher an hour, compared to the Chernobyl lifetime dose.

1,7 millisivert a year is the maximum allowed radiation level for civilians.

Virginia earthquake almost hits limit for nuclear plant (5.9 Richter)

Virginia nuclear plant; earthquake related problems

On August 23, 2011 Virginia was hit by a 5.9 earthquake. The epicenter was just 16km (10 mile) from the nuclear plant.

According to a representative of Dominion Power, the Virginia nuclear plant was built to only withstand a 5.9-6.1 earthquake (Richter scale).

The quake caused loss of offsite power to the plant. Diesel generators were used to keep the cooling system running.

However, one of the four diesel generators stopped working after startup, David McIntyre, a spokesman for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said.

According the Nuclear Regulatory Commision the chances of serious earthquake-related issues for the Virginia plant are calculated to be no more than 1 in 22,727.

During the 1990s the earthquake detectors for this plant were removed because of budget cuts.

The North Anna plant, is reportedly located on a fault line.

Recently several incidents related to nuclear plants were reported throughout the USA.

The loss of offsite power and failure of generators caused the ongoing nuclear disaster in Fukushima (Japan).

Russian spaceship “Progress” crashes on flight to ISS

The Russian cargo spaceship Progress M-12M has crashed in Russia. The spacecraft’s wreckage was found in the Altai Region in southern Siberia.

According to the head of the district, the explosion was so extremely strong that the windows of buildings 100 kilometers from the place where the spacecraft crashed were nearly smashed.

No casualties have been reported.

The Progress vessel was to deliver 2.6 tonnes of cargo to the International Space Station (ISS), including water, food, oxygen, fuel.

NASA and NOAA will discuss recently discovered details about the structure of solar storms and the impact they will have on Earth. The new information comes from NASA’s Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory, or STEREO, spacecraft and other NASA probes.

sunspot 1263: X-class flare just occured

An X-class (X7 according to Spaceweather.com) solar flare just occured from sunspot 1263, apparantly around 8:35 UTC.

X-class flares are the most powerful category of solar flares, which can cause all sorts of problems when earth-directed. It is currently unkown whether this is the case.

Last week has been an extremely active period, with 3 M-class CME’s (originating from sunspot 1261) merging into one large CME.

UPDATE: according to Solarham.com the flare is not fully earth-directed.

Sunspot 1263 doubles in size in just 28 hour: X-class flare could occur

Sunspot 1263 doubles in size

Sunspot 1263 has doubled in size over the past 28 hours. According to SDO/HMI it has a “beta-gamma-delta” class magnetic field that harbors energy for X-class solar flares, the strongest class for solar flares.

X-class flares have a high probability of disrupting power grids and wireless communication.

Interestingly, sunspot 1263 will be almost in the same place as sunspot 1261 last week, which erupted 3 times causing earth-directed M-class flares.

ALERT: third strong solar flare in a row, major impact expected

2 solar flares merged into one huge CME

A major geomagnetic impact is expected August 5th around 10:00 (UT), as two strong M-class flares have merged into one giant flare, according to GSFC Space Weather Lab.

August 4th, a third strong CME was ejected from our sun,

“The impact on Earth is likely to be major. The estimated maximum geomagnetic activity index level Kp is 7 (Kp ranges from 0 – 9). The flanks of the CME may also impact STEREO A, Mars and Mercury/MESSENGER.”

Sunspot 1261 erupted on August 2nd at 0619 UT, producing a long-duration M1-class solar flare. Today (august 3th) an even bigger eruption occured (M6-class)

The blasts hurled 2 CME’s almost directly toward Earth.

For the first time, Tufts University biologists have reported that bioelectrical signals are necessary for normal head and facial formation in an organism and have captured that process in a time-lapse video that reveals never-before-seen patterns of visible bioelectrical signals outlining where eyes, nose, mouth, and other features will appear in an embryonic tadpole.
